Tiffany & Robert – Save the Date

Tiffany and Robert are one of the awesome couples we get to work with this year. Leslie is already in the works helping plan their outdoor wedding this September. They live in Chicago but will be getting married on Tiffany’s family farm here in Iowa. First, I want to show off these Save the Dates we collaborated on. Leslie spent this past weekend screen printing them on wood veneer. We all love how they turned out, but more importantly, Tiffany and Robert do too :)

The bride will be sending these out soon to friends and family. It will be the first piece of mail anyone sees announcing their engagement and upcoming wedding. We look at weddings as a cohesive event so there are elements of the Save the Date that will carry over into their invitation design, which will all come together on their big day. We’re excited to be working with Tiffany and Robert, and we’ll continue to pop in with updates and fun projects we’re working on from time to time.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Today we all showed up in the same room sporting some type of red and denim attire. How does this happen?! I suppose this is the day to wear red so it was bound to happen, especially if you know David and me. We tend to look alike and wear similar outfits anyway. Sadly, I have no picture to show you.

To celebrate the day we enjoyed delicious heart-shaped almond cakes.

Don’t mind the iphone photo :)

Happy Valentine’s Day from all of us at The Wedding Format!

Wedding Cakes for Jack and Raechel Los Angeles, California – Marvimon House

In October I had the pleasure of baking wedding cakes for Jack and Raechel’s wedding which was held in Los Angeles, California at the lovely Marvimon House. The bride and groom chose 3 different cake flavors for me to bake, which included a Spiced Fig Cake, Lemon Poppyseed, and a Campfire Cake.  They chose the flavors due to their love of fresh figs in and on as many dishes as possible, romantic evenings spent together roasting marshmallows for S’mores on their blazing fire pit, and Jack’s grandmother’s traditional Polish Lemon Poppyseed cake he grew up eating.

Jack and Raechel are dear friends of mine from college days and being a part of their special day was such an honor. I wish them many years of love and devotion!

Meet Leslie

For those of you who haven’t yet heard the news, Leslie has joined our team! Leslie is Dave’s older sister. We are so excited to have her craftiness and expertise on board. This decision has been a long time coming, and over the holiday season, we moved Leslie home from Brooklyn, NY.

Leslie is a super talented lady. Anything from sewing, to paper craft, to cooking or baking, to color selection and interior design, or knitting, Leslie does it… and well. We like to joke that she has been bred for this job :) The Poyzers weren’t allowed to watch much television growing up. So instead of watching cartoons on Saturday mornings, you’d find her watching cooking shows on PBS while folding laundry. Instead of playing with an Easy-Bake Oven, Leslie perfected flour “pies” and other concoctions in her mother’s real-life, adult-sized kitchen. By age six she was making tasty rice crispy treats all on her own.

We are now offering wedding planning services and baked goods (yes, wedding cakes!), and Leslie is the gal bringing them to the table. So if you’re in need of a wedding planner, day-of coordinator, or just someone to consult with to help get your wedding planning and decor ideas headed in the right direction, get in touch with Leslie. She is one of the friendliest people I know and such a joy to work with. I know you’ll love her too.

As a Poyzer, I continue the creative genes. If I am not working on the next decor project, I’m in the kitchen trying out a new recipe.

In college, I studied Interior Design, Marketing, and Fashion Design Merchandising – all being a part of my creative mix. I love using my talents to creatively solve problems, making things both pleasing to the eye and functional. In the past, I used my skills to successfully develop interior spaces that would fuse two individuals tastes into one; a skill I now use as a wedding coordinator. It is important to me to incorporate an engaged couple’s personalities, interests, and traditions into their wedding day. These elements are what make their day truly, uniquely special.

In the kitchen you will find me and my Kitchenaid Mixer (we are best friends) covered from head to toe in flour. I scour through cookbooks and food blogs looking for new recipes to try out on all my family and friends. I find so much pleasure in baking for others and seeing the delight on someone’s face as they sample my latest baked good. I love to see how food brings everyone together and gives us a sense of tradition and family, especially at a wedding.

The days I am not in the kitchen or coordinating a wedding I am producing stories for Do It Yourself magazine, a Better Homes and Gardens publication. It’s yet another outlet for me to use the many talents I’ve been so blessed with.

I’m so excited to be working alongside David, Mariah, and Joey. We’ve been having a great time, and I can’t wait to get started on your next wedding project.”

Scott & Kristin Super 8 Wedding Film – Des Moines, Iowa

Check out these love birds.

Scott and Kristin were married August 4th in a beautiful, rustic studio space in Des Moines’s East Village. It was a lovely wedding accented with fantastic live music (Scott and Kristin are both amazing musicians so it was a big part of their day), a gorgeous ceremony backdrop made from receipt paper (believe it or not!), great food, fire lanterns, and lots of friends!

The reception, we can honestly say, was the most fun we’ve had at a wedding to date. It was held at a music venue also in the East Village called Wooly’s. It was the perfect spot to host an intimate dinner for family and close friends following the ceremony, and then set loose a humongous dance party a short time later. The End, a Beatles tribute band that Scott plays in, started the night off right, followed by DJ Eight Ten and Flatform.

Dave is really pumped with how this film turned out. He is always researching new techniques and trying new things (if you want to know more, head to the bottom of the post). So here, my friends, please enjoy!

Scott & Kristin’s Wedding Day on Super 8 from The Wedding Format on Vimeo.

Nerdy Tech Notes From Dave: Scott and Kristin’s Super 8 video was shot on two Kodak film stocks. Ektachrome 100D (a positive film I normally shoot on) and Vision 3 500T (a negative film which requires inverting). Where things got really interesting, was pushing the Vision 3 film two extra stops! Pushing two stops is basically shooting it like a 2000 ASA film and developing it longer to compensate for under exposing it. Doing this made it possible to film in a dark room AND in slow motion, 70 frames per second to be exact. That requires a 1/250th shutter speed! We knew going into this, it was kind of a crap shoot, but we managed to get just enough light for this film to turn out spectacularly! The 8mm wide film stock held up amazingly well, bringing us details of the night not normally possible to capture on such a small film format.

Emily & Cameron Wedding Photos – Summerset Winery, Indianola, Iowa

The boys (Dave and Joey) got to photograph Emily and Cameron’s wedding together and had a great time. They both told me afterward what a great and relaxed bride Emily was to work with. The weather was on the chilly side; Dave said there were even a couple snowflakes. You wouldn’t be able to tell, though, because these two are so gushy in love. Clearly their eyes were on a wedding, and even moving the planned outdoor ceremony indoors, didn’t put a damper on things. It pleases me to show you these images. There’s a whole lot of joy in these faces and some hip dance moves to follow.

Jennifer & Dave Wedding Photos Part 2 – Jon Anderson White Riverboat – Des Moines, Iowa

We had a great time shooting Jennifer and Dave’s wedding on the Des Moines Riverboat. When they first contacted us about wedding photography, we were surprised to hear Des Moines had a riverboat. Well indeed she has one, and it made for a special and celebratory time for family and friends to tour the river before heading to the reception. It was a unique experience, and, I imagine, it made the day even more exciting for all the guests.
